Norman froze, how could he be rejected before he could even ask or offer his services so quickly like that? Was Christian not seeing how dire their situation was? Maybe it was him that was in the wrong and was just going on ignorance? No, not to this extent, neither of them were in the right, nor wrong, certainly not Norman.



“Wait, I wasn’t going to ask--Well, I mean, I was going to, eventually. I was the top ranking officer of my age, and I’m a very fast learner I’ll have you know--no, that’s not…” He pinched his brow and gathered himself from his rambles, he would not lose control of this conversation and be brushed off so easily.



“What I meant was that’s not enough people for a basic patrol even in a normal town of this population; And, from what I’ve seen, every church member here is pulling double duty as both religion and law during the day and night.” He sighed, his usually gentle face now turning towards a frown, “And that alone appears to have taken a serious toll on morale and mental well-being.” How could he forget how desperate and broken poor Brother Bast was? How tired and fearful everyone in this town appeared?



“Christian, I know I’m not a priest, or a healer, or by any means what you are; but I made a vow and trained myself to serve and protect. Please, I can’t just give up my duty like this now, I can still offer my services. I can learn if I must!”
